This story is read for pleasure and also studied by students the world over. In this story--- an American family, the Otis family, moves to England and purchases a house known as Canterville Chase. They are warned that it is haunted but scoff at the idea of ghosts. Soon, they start hearing strange noises are woken up at night to see the ghostly figure of the ghost. The ghost is the ghost of a man named Simon Canterville. Simon had killed his wife and then went missing. His body has never been found but ever since his ghost has haunted the house. The three boys in the Otis family have great fun at the expense of the ghost. They play tricks on the ghost and usually manage to get the better of him at every point. Even Mr and Mrs Otis treat the ghost with a sort of casual friendliness. Only Virginia leaves ghost alone. One day Virginia sees the ghost sitting sadly and talks to him. She finds that the ghost has not been able to rest because his body has never been found and it has never been buried properly. Virginia is a kind hearted girl and she accompanies the ghost to the place where his body lies. In the mean-while, her family is worried to find Virginia missing. They begin looking for her and have almost given up when she comes back. She takes them to see the secret room where the ghost was murdered and hidden. The family arranges for the burial of the ghost.
The story is popular because for once a ghost treated without any of the fear that one associates with the ghosts. This story is studied by the school students also as they have this story as their 'novel book' which is the part of their English subject.
