HE IS known as much for his style of detection as for his he constantly smokes. His name is today synonymous with a detective.
Yes, we are talking about Sherlock Holmes, whose style and detecting methods continue to inspire people to this day. Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as a man who is cold blooded and whose methods of detection don't necessarily involve going out and looking for clues.
Holmes prefers to use his brain to arrive at conclusions. His keen sense of observation helps him notice things that would be missed by most other people. In addition to this is his ability to put two and two together and arrive at the solution to a problem. Holmes often surprises people with the deductions h makes.
However, when Holmes explains the steps whereby he has arrived at these conclusions, it is apparent that he has used his powers of observation to good effect.
This ability to use common sense and a sound knowledge of human nature to arrive at certain assumptions is an interesting technique developed by the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This trend is observed in the way Agatha Christie's two detectives, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, solve crime after seemingly  unsolved crimes. Holmes is today a name that is synonymous with an unusual style of detection and ability to solve apparently unsolvable crimes give Holmes a certain degree of arrogance. Despite this arrogance and confidence in himself, Holmes is not a man who seeks attention, and usually is content to let others take credit for his work. For all of these reasons, and for the hours of immense fun that Holmes has given us with his amazing ability to deduce important facts from apparently
trivial details, Holmes is one of the most unforgettable characters from books.
