Why do Bridges Wobble ?
Scientists have long puzzled over the question as to why some bridges wobble when people walk over them.
A new study says that some pedestrian bridges sway because of the awkward way in which people walk over them. As people walk along it , they subconsciously adjust their stride to accommodate the tiny movement the bridges makes , say , in the presence of a wind. When many people are doing the same thing , their steps exert enough force to make the bridge start wobbling .
It is a vicious cycle . The wobble makes people adjust their strides even more to stabilize themselves . This causes the bridge to wobble even more !
