When the IBM Simon was introduced to the market in USA on August 16, 1994, it wasn't called a smartphone. It was the first device to combine a telephone with features of a computer.

Weighing about 500 gm, the device had a green touchscreen which could be operated with a stylus.  It was named Simon because it was simple and could do almost anything the user wanted like in the game of 'Simon Says '. In addition to making and receiving calls, it could send and receive faxes, e-mails and cellular pages. It was loaded with applications like address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock and electronic note pad.

The Simon was basic compared to today's smartphones, but it was far ahead of its times in the 1990s. Around 50,000 units were sold for $899-$1099 before it was discontinued. The phone was not very popular owing its poor battery life of only one hour.
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the IBM SIMON was included as part of a permanent exhibition on the history of communication and information technology at London's Science.
