WHAT IS A SURGICAL STRIKE ?
On september 29, Indian Army conducted successful surgical strikes across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian Commandos stormed 7 terrorist camps in the midnight assault, killed dozens and made it back to the Indian side without any casualties.
A surgical strike is a type of military attack in which a specific enemy target is attacked and neutralized with minimum or no Collateral Damage. It is a covert operation in which speed and the element of surprise are essential. It is not a full scale war.
Such a strike can be carried out in three ways.
- Air strikes are the most convenient way of attacking the enemy by dropping missiles on their territory. This kind of operation obviously needs a Superior Force. For example, USA demonstrated its tremendous air power during the First and Second Persian Gulf Wars.
- The second method involves airdroping teams of special Ops Commandos who attack the target with lightning speed and retreat. The Operation Geronimo conducted by the US forces to kill Osama Bin Laden is a prominent example.
- The third method is a ground operation like the recent Indian strike in Kashmir in which the Commandos enter the enemy territory on foot and swiftly carry out the attack.
Surgical strikes require reliable Intelligence and Precision planning in order to succeed. Armies around the world use such tactics to minimise their own casualties and inflict maximum damage to the enemy.
