Why do motorcycles produce such a loud noise ?

All motor vehicles are sold with noise blockers called mufflers. They muffle the sounds made by the engine and the exhaust.
In a car, the sounds made by the engine and the exhaust are efficiently blocked by the mufflers and other sound absorbing systems, including the body of the car. In a motorcycle, the engine is exposed and the sound travels directly into the air. Secondly, as there is little room for bulky mufflers, the ones installed in the exhaust pipes are not too effective. As a result, the motorcycle produces considerable noise when in motion. The manufacturers can, of course, install more efficient mufflers but that would cut into the efficiency of the engine and also displease users. Most bike owners love the loud sound their motorcycle makes. It gives them a sense of power and also serves as a warning to pedestrians and other vehicles of their approach.
